Honors Degree in Psychology

 

The Rochester skyline on a cloudy day Students should form the intention and plan to enter the honors program by the first semester of their junior year or before. Success in this program requires commitment to a working engagement with research in psychology. Students in the honors program should secure a faculty mentor early on in their pursuit of the degree. (Mentors are often sought and found as part of PSY 309.) Most students in the honors program are intending to pursue graduate study in psychology, and the program is tailored to their preparation for that goal.

 

Requirements for the Honors Degree in Psychology:

 

1. Completion of the requirements for the major in psychology and for the Honors Degree with a cumulative grade point average of 3.30 or better.

 

2. To be considered for Honors, the student's program must include:

a) Research Methods in Psychology (PSY 219W), or other formal laboratory course, preferably prior to the Spring of the Junior Year. (Note: a satisfactory statistics course is a prerequisite for PSY 219W.)

 

b) Honors Research Seminar (PSY 309), or, if this course is not available either a second upper level course in psychology or an independent study in psychology.

 

c) One upper level (300 level) course in psychology other than PSY 309, 310, & 311.

 

d) Honors Research I (PSY 310) & II (PSY 311). These are independent research courses done with the supervision of the student's honors mentor and with ongoing support from the Honors Advisers.

 

e) Completion of an acceptable senior thesis.
